Objective

The aim of the course is to present the field of materials research of conservation as part of multidisciplinary heritology. Students will learn new analytical methods developed in materials research which have been applied to studying cultural historical objects and materials.

Content

The course will include both lectures and practical laboratory work. The course will include such non-invasive, non-destructive and micro-methods and analytical techniques which can give information regarding the elemental composition and molecular structure of heritage materials and their degradation with time.
The course will provide background to several analytical techniques like: VIS-, FTIR/ ATR-, EDXRF-, Raman-, NMR- spectroscopes.

Qualifications

The student must have B.A. level studies of Conservation chemistry.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student shows minimum relevant knowledge and lacks insight.
The structure is unclear, language poor, application of terminology and methodology inconsistent and either inappropriate or absent.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student shows sufficient knowledge. The structure of the work is satisfactory, with appropriate application of terminology and methodology, language and references.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student demonstrates extensive knowledge of the subject. The work is very well structured, with precise application of terminology and methodology, excellent language and accurate and full references.



The student must have B.A. level studies of Conservation chemistry.
