Chemistry 2Laajuus (4 ECTS)
Course unit code: KI00AA24
General information
- Credits
- 4 ECTS
Objective
This course provides the student with the basics of polymeric chemistry and the most important chemical and physical properties of polymers. The course enables the student to learn and identify the most important groups of natural materials. He/she will also have a good command of the different effects chemical consistencies have on the use and ageing properties of natural materials. The student will learn about the most important methods for testing and analysing both synthetic and natural materials.
Content
The course covers theory and applications of polymeric chemistry and synthetic materials which are used in conservation as adhesives, varnishes, reinforcements and plastic membranes. The course serves as an introduction to the chemistry of natural materials. The theory behind natural binders will be discussed in accordance with chemical groups. Application examples will be taken from the natural materials used in conservation. The course also includes testing and analysing natural binding materials and synthetic materials.
Qualifications
Chemistry I passed
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Approved passing of the course demands that the student fulfills the requirements specified in each course implementation.
