History of Drama 1Laajuus (3 ECTS)

Objective

The student becomes familiar with the most important phases of Western drama from Antiquity to the 19th century as well as the history of other genres of performing arts. The student understands the performance practices, styles, performing spaces, and scenery and performance related techniques of each era as well as the conceptions of the world embodied in the different historical forms of performance.

Content

The course covers the origin and evolution of Western drama, opera, and ballet, the most important turning points in their history, and the characteristics of different eras from the viewpoint of the history of performing arts, theatrical architecture, and scenery. The course includes a lecture series and assignments and can be partly implemented as e-learning.
