Objective

- The student will be able to form a holistic picture of cultural heritage and she/he knows cultural heritage as concept and understands the significance of cultural heritage.
- The student will understand conservation being a part of the care and preservation of the cultural heritage.
- The student will know the working field and the role of a conservator in the preservation of cultural heritage.
- The student will understand the significance and elementary role of memory organizations.
- The student will know the essential laws, statutes and regulations that regulate cultural heritage and conservation both at the national and international level.
- The student will know the ethical codes and guidelines of conservation, and adopts conservator’s professional ethics.
- The student will know the national and international cultural heritage and memory organizations as well as conservation organizations and their working methods, principles and publications.

- The student will have the knowledge and understanding of the basic conservation materials, their properties, applications and techniques common to all fields of conservation.
- The student will know where to purchase various conservation materials, tools and equipment.
- The student will know the basic equipment used in conservation and is able to use those accordingly.

- The student will understand and adopts the philosophical and ethical issues related to care and conservation of cultural heritage regarding the object preservation.
- The student will adopt the above issues and is able to adopt them to practice when dealing with indigenous people, their rights and situation.
- The student will identify immaterial and material cultural heritage.
- The student will know the basics of conservation photography, and is able to produce photographs essential for conservation documentation.
- The student will have preparedness for image processing.

- The role and the profession of a conservator in the preservation of cultural heritage
- The concept and significance of cultural heritage
- The significance of memory organizations and their duties
- The working field of a museum professional and the role of a conservation in the preservation of cultural heritage
- Philosophical and ethical foundations in conservation
- The laws, statutes and regulations in cultural heritage and conservation
- The ethical codes, guidelines and professional ethics in conservation
- National and international cultural heritage and memory organizations, conservation organizations, principles and publications of the conservation field
- Materials and equipment commonly used in conservation, their use, properties and purchase
- The rights and cultural liability of indigenous people
- Immaterial and material cultural heritage
- Foundation course in conservation photography, image processing

Teaching methods

Lecture, contact teaching, demonstration, problem based learning, assignments, guided assignments, independent work with literature.

Student workload

The weekly working hours of a student is 1,5 cr which is equivalent to 40 hours of studies. 40 hours is formed from approx. 18 hours of contact studies with a lecturer. The remaining hours is spent by independent literature survey or practical work. 1 credit (cr) is equivalent to 27 hours (h).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has a lot of absences from the teaching sessions. Activity during the teaching sessions and learning assignments is unsatisfactory. The student should improve her/his group working abilities.

The capacity to formulate relevant problems associated with the work is limited and therefore the problem solving and ability to apply theoretical studies to a practical work need to be improved.

The student does not work independently and there is a lot of need for teacher’s further guidance. The student has not given a requisite amount of attention for the subject and the result of the course is unbalanced. The student needs to improve her/his skills and knowledge in many areas.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has taken part to all of the teaching sessions and learning assignments and the activity for the course is good. The student acts flexibly as a group member.

The studies proceed coherently. The student is able to understand the basic motifs of the course and is able to apply theoretical studies to a practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal works is competent and the student understands causes and consequences of one's choice.

The student works independently but there is still need for teacher’s further guidance. The student has given a requisite amount of attention for the subject and the result of the course is balanced. The student has achieved a good level at her/his skills and knowledge.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The course objectives have been achieved in a competent manner. The student has taken actively and constructively part to the teaching and learning assignments. The student’s function enhances group activities.

The student masters the motifs of the course and prerequisites and is able to apply theoretical studies to a practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal works is professional and the student can validate causes and consequences of one's choice.

The student works independently enough. The student is able to master the whole of subject both in theory and practice. The student has achieved an excellent level at her/his skills and knowledge.

Assessment is based on continuous assessment of a student, attendance, learning assignments and their assessment.

The course is implemented as a project based learning. Idea is learning through making the practical work. Student has a role as an investigative learner.
