Specific admission requirements

The Degree Programme organises an individual entrance examination. Success in the entrance examination requires long-term practice in music or previous music studies.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences students may apply for identification and accreditation of prior learning as part of their compulsory or optional studies, provided they have prior learning corresponding to the curriculum before the course in question begins.

The Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Degree Programme in Music stands for the highest standards of musical and pedagogical excellence.
As a dynamic leader in the classical and pop/jazz field, the Metropolia Music Degree Programme is continuously innovating to meet future challenges. By applying novel approaches to music pedagogy in harmony with the evolution of instrumental music tradition, the institute promotes musical performance and pedagogy in a variety of contexts. A key part of our approach is the collaboration with the rich and varied music and cultural life in and around Helsinki through innovative R & D and working life projects.
Musical productions and instrumental expertise are at the heart of our students’ education. The process includes production of recitals, chamber music, orchestra, opera, pop/jazz bands, and music theatre connected to projects in schools, music institutes and social services.
Our students experience a truly multi-disciplinary environment via co-operation with other Metropolia degree programmes, such as Film and Television, Cultural Management, Design, Conservation, Fashion and Clothing, and Media and Well-being. National and international professional links ensure that our students are highly equipped for the creative environments in which they will work.
Music students graduate as Bachelors of Culture and Arts, specializing in Music Education (Music Educator) or Music (Musician). Both Bachelor’s degrees are also available as continuing education for adults for those with previous work experience and/or higher education qualifications. This flexible range of undergraduate programmes offers high-level training that provides the springboard to a professional career or further study.

Music Educator's Degree, Learning Outcomes
At the completion of their studies, the students have the ability to promote memorable and supportive learning in music. They know how to bridge skills in art and pedagogy with learning based on learners’ strengths and interactive pedagogy. According to their orientation, while managing manifold methods in music and pedagogy and possibilities of the applied use of art, they are able to work with learners of different backgrounds and ages, coaching and teaching individuals and groups.
The students understand the meanings in music pedagogy and are able to reason them to learners and the society. They are capable of reflecting their own activity and team work, as well as of interaction in professional work communities. In their vocational development and recognition of possibilities in continuous learning, students understand the meaning of networks as cornerstone of changing and developing work life.
Musician's Degree, Learning Outcomes
At the completion of their studies, the students are able to develop their own and realize others’ artistic visions in a high level, and possess the required skills and knowledge to achieve this. They have acquired facilities to work in various genres of music in a professional and creative manner. The students have gained experience of public performances and their related duties and practices. They are able to write and perform music in a high level both as an individual and and as a member of a group.
The students know how to utilize latest technology to support and develop their own artistic expression. They can network, have familiarized themselves with the operators in the domestic and international music sectors, and have widened their connections within the working life. The students understand the importance of good workplace and life management skills in their employment and well-being at work. They possess good project management and people skills, and know how to apply their expert knowledge in various working environments within the music sector.
The students know how to search for and analyze information critically, how to analyze and reflect one’s own and others’ behavior, and how to express themselves orally and in writing. They can produce and interpret musical notation and other means of graphic and literary expression of music. The students perceive lines of development in music and can position their own music-making within a historical context. They understand the importance of entrepreneurial attitude in the working life, how the music business works, copyright legislation and practices, and various procedures in the field of music involving agreements and reports.

Access to further studies

Graduates can apply for master’s degree programmes in applicable universities and art colleges, and for the Master’s Degree Programme in Music at the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. At the beginning of the course, students must be informed on the assessment principles, which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.
The assesment scale and framework for all the studies:
Pass (A): A performance that meets at least the minimum criteria. The candidate demonstrates a sufficient degree of judgement and independent thinking.
Satisfactory (1-2): A performance that meets the minimum criteria. The candidate demonstrates a limited degree of judgement and independent thinking.
Good (3-4): A good performance in most areas. The candidate demonstrates a reasonable degree of judgement and independent thinking in the most important areas.
Excellent (5): An excellent performance, clearly outstanding. The candidate demonstrates excellent judgement and a high degree of independent thinking.

Graduation requirements

Completion or accreditation of all required courses, as specified in the curriculum of the chosen specialization.

Mode of study

The extent of the Degree Programme is 240 ECTS and the duration 4 years. The students are required to study full-time. The studies comprise instruction, guided self-study, and work placement. Most of the instruction is given during the daytime.

The studies are implemented with diverse co-operation with working life. 30 ECTS of practical training are conducted during several years of study.

Obligatory or Optional Mobility

The music students have several opportunities to apply for international student exchange through Erasmus and Nordplus programmes. The recommended time for exchange is the 3rd year of the studies.
