The studies in the Degree Programme Health and Social Services, Elderly Care provide students with professional competence in developing, planning and coordinating care services for the elderly. Students learn to promote and strengthen the well-being, health, participation and functional capacity of the elderly. The education emphasises human ageing as a unique and individual stage of life. Elderly persons are seen as taking active roles in their lives and in society.

The core of professional expertise comprises:
Professional development
Ageing in society
Promotion of social inclusion and health of the elderly
Different life situations of the elderly
Management, leadership and networking in elderly care
Research and development as well as innovations in elderly care

During the education, students acquire competence in developing services for the elderly in multiprofessional cooperation.

The extent of the degree programme is 210 ECTS. The studies consist of both theoretical and practical studies as well as elective studies and a final thesis. The extent of the final thesis is 15 credits, and the elective studies cover 10 credits. The degree programme comprises 75 credits of clinical practice in diverse elderly care settings. Practice is also carried out within theoretical studies. The theoretical knowledge and practical skills are tightly intertwined with different teaching methods and learning environments. The close integration of theory and practice prepares students to work and cooperate in multiprofessional contexts. Students learn to reflect on their own actions and emotions.

Development

Syksyllä 2010 alkavaa alkavaa aikuiskoulutusta varten on tehty uusi osaamispohjainen opetussuunnitelma. Opetussuunnitelman valmistelu alkoi tammikuussa 2009. Lisäksi projektipäällikkö Leila Lintula on konsultoinut osaamispohjaista opetussuunnitelmatyötä.

Opetussuunnitelmaa on käsitelty vanhustyön neuvottelukunnan kokouksessa neljä kertaa (3.2.2009, 30.9.2009, 25.11.2009, 18.1.2010). Lisäksi työelämäneuvottelukunnan jäseniä osallistui koulutusohjelman opetussuunnittelun kehittämispäivään 28.5.2009. Samaan kehittämispäivään osallistui työelämänedustajana myös erityissosiaalityöntekijä Hanna Liikanen Helsingin kaupungilta.

Opetussuunnitelmaluonnoksen valmistututtua järjestettiin yhteinen arviointi- ja keskustelutilaisuus 9.2.2010. Opetussuunnitelmasta antoi kirjallista palautetta tai osallistui suulliseen keskustelutilaisuuteen 7 työelämän edustajaa. Työelämän palautetta antoivat: Ylihoitaja Päivi Markkanen Helsingin terveyskeskuksesta (Herttoniemen sairaala), Suunnittelija Pirjo Lehto, Helsingin kaupungin Riistavuoren vanhusten keskuksesta, Asiakassuhdevastaava Jaana Sulkava Hoivakoti Päiväkumpu oysta, Geronomi AMK, projektityöntekijä Natalia Solovieva ja Geronomi AMK, projektityöntekijä Tarja Zhou Suomen muistiasiantuntijat rystä, Palvelukeskuksen johtaja/kotihoidonohjaaja Kaija Tenhunen Espoon kaupungi Tapiolan palvelukeskuksesta, kotihoidon ohjaaja Päivi Penttinen Helsingin kaupungin kotihoidosta.

Lisäksi he ovat ryhmänä arvioineet osaamispohjaista aikuiskoulutuksen opetussuunnitelmaluonnosta 19.2010.
