Objective

Students learn to analyse ageing of population, changes in age and family structures in society and especially in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area as well as their significance for old people’s status, public health and service development. Students learn to identify social structures and factors weakening old people’s possibilities for full citizenship and participation in their own community and society. Students identify and analyse social factors affecting the creation of images and notions of the elderly.

Content

Ageing of population and its effects on society and public health. Changes in population and family structures. Ageing of population and its effects on the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Images and notions of the elderly. Age racism and its impact on the status and participation of the elderly in community and society.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students use the appropriate core concepts as well as make choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They recognise the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.

Students’ actions follow the rules and instructions given, and they use working methods appropriately and safely.

Students work according to the professional ethics of their own field, and they act responsibly as group members.
