Descriptions
Internationality and development of technology are key factors affecting the development and developing of services in the social and health care sector. Their impact on welfare services is mainly indirect. Globalisation increases international competition, and thus the ability to produce welfare services. The pressure to improve the input of health care by means of technology has increased, and it can be expected that technology will be utilised considerably more in future. Moreover, it is likely that different fields of expertise will work more closely together. The service sector often works at the borderline of different fields and in future, the parallel development of various fields will be emphasised even more. The ageing of the population results in the increase of services, and it will have a huge impact on the growing demand and organisation of these services.
The premises of social and health care services are clients' needs and their recognition in a client-oriented way. Clients' expertise and knowledge (on illnesses, treatments and services) has increased, resulting in heavy demand on health care services. Receiving information and the access of it on the Internet as well as new means of technology has changed and will continue to change the nature of services rapidly. It seems that citizens will continue with their active role concerning their care to an even greater degree, irrespective of whether it is accepted as a premise of welfare services. On the other hand, the citizens' responsibility for their care and that of community will increase in future.
Apart from the development of technology, the quick flow of information has an impact on health care work. Care practices and diagnostic methods develop so fast that they will be completely replaced within five to ten years, depending on the sector. Experts in social and health care are expected to acquire competence to meet the new challenges as well as embrace the ability to change. Therefore, competence is a major asset in the workplace. It is of paramount importance to create such working conditions that staff members are committed to their work and demonstrate their competence for the benefit of their workplace.
