Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning
With regard to the recognition and accreditation of acquired competencies, Degree programme in Cultural Management adheres to the following principles: Transfer of credit is possible when the student has completed studies generating similar competencies at some other institute of higher education. Studies at a university of applied sciences can also be completed by demonstration. This can involve earlier studies or work experience. Students can receive accreditation for work placement completed in another institute of higher education if this work placement meets the objectives set for work placement in the current degree programme. The thesis cannot be completed by demonstration. The thesis also does not earn credit for another degree.

Qualification requirements and regulations
Completing the degree requires 240 ECTS credits specified in the curriculum.

Profile of the programme
The Cultural Management programme is focused on creative industries and business skills. The aim is that the student becomes an expert with good practical skills of basic processes needed in the cultural production and at the same time unique expertise. Personal study plans are tailored for each student.

Key learning outcomes
- Competence in a cultural operating environment
Students are familiar with current trends in culture and arts, as well as their historical background. Students are able to identify and analyse cultural phenomena and their personal relationship with them. Students are able to analyse the professional field of culture, and to follow it through the media, studies and public debates. Students understand and are able to utilise the structures of cultural administration and politics. Students understand the different operating models of the public, third and business sectors, and are able to outline their future development. Students are able to analyse and develop their professional identity as a cultural producer.
- Business competence in cultural production and management
Students are familiar with financial planning, budgeting and financial monitoring, and understand the legislation related to their field. Students are able to seek funding for and implement a cultural product. Students know the basics of marketing and communication from the perspective of cultural production and management. Students know how to productise a concept profitably in the creative industries.
- Competence in production processes
Students are able to create multiprofessional networks and to organise and lead production processes in the cultural sector. Students are familiar with the different stages of project organisation, planning and implementation in the cultural sector. Students are familiar with the legislation related to cultural production and management, and are able to apply their knowledge in production work. Students possess the communication and media skills required in the field. Students know the basics of production engineering and media technology, and are able to apply their knowledge in production work. Students are able to study and develop different stages of the production process.

Occupational profiles of graduates
Cultural managers are art and business experts who make cultural projects possible. They are responsible for smooth running of a cultural event or service. They make sure that it is well planned and professionally carried out, and it reaches its customers and achieves the objectives. Cultural managers graduated from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences work in occupations that focus on cultural industries, production processes and organising for example as event of festival managers, event production companies, advertising and media sectors, music business, cultural export, cultural and leisure organisations, public sector cultural occupations and cultural entrepreneurs.

Access to further studies
- Eligible for polytechnic specialisation studies
- Eligible for second-cycle polytechnic studies with at least three years of relevant work experience
- Eligible to pursue university studies; in individual cases access to second-cycle university programmes (based on the decision by the receiving institution)

Core skills and competences are produced through four competence streams. Each areas of competence consist of several areas of specialization and deepening of one's skills.

Development

The curriculum has been written together with teaching staff and work representatives. The first draft was written by nine teachers working at the degree program during autumn 2011. Starting point was previous curriculum, which was developed towards knowledge based curriculum. In addition areas of business skills were strengthened on the basis of teachers experience from teaching and working in cultural manager positions. A focus of especial attention was building of learning streams that combine essential competences to wider competence areas. The first draft of the curriculum was send out for comments in December 2011. Comments were asked from 30 organizations representing the actors on field of arts management, development projects organized by educational organizations and associations aiming to develop the field. Six organizational representatives replied and over all stated that the curriculum is ambitious and extensive. Also some additional ideas were stated at several courses. After corrections and clarifications the curriculum was sent to advisory council of cultural management degree programme and the curriculum was discussed at meeting on 31st January 2012. After additions that the advisory council placed the curriculum has been set for reading of Metropolia exctubie board on 3rd March 2012.
