Occupational profiles of graduates
The objective of the Master’s Degree Programme in Social Services is to educate professionals who are able to work in tasks developing basic and special services of social services and assume managerial roles in client service as well as work as special experts of their field. The competences are: Special expertise in the field of social services, management and development in the field of social services and research and development. The degree places considerable emphasis on the promotion of social welfare of children, young people and families. The social work strengthens them and is based on partnership.

Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Services and Bachelor’s Degree in Elderly Care can be accepted in the Master’s Degree Programme in Social Services. The extent of the studies is 90 ECTS credits, and they can be completed alongside work. Of the studies, 55 credits include advanced professional studies (45 credits general studies for all students and 10 credits optional). The remaining credits comprise the Master’s thesis (30 credits) and elective studies (5 credits). The contact teaching is mainly implemented during three terms. The duration of the studies is 1.5 – 2 years.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading
Course assesment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. Students will be informed at the beginning of the course on the assessment principles, wich must be based on the course objectives.

Graduation requirements
A student is required to successfully complete the designated program of courses.

Mode of study
The studies in the Master’s Degree Programme in Social Services are carried out as multiform learning. The workplace plays an important role during the studies and is a central learning and development environment. Evaluation of learning is a quality element present in all phases of the learning and teaching process. It is both instructing and developing in nature.

Development

To formulate the curriculum, an internal work group of the degree programme was named. To promote the development of the Master’s Degree Programme in Social Services, a steering group was formed in the spring of 2011. It has dealt with the objectives and content of the degree programme and its curriculum as well as the admission criteria and the professional focus of the programme considering the needs of the work environment, the development of the labour market situation of the degree programme and other similar education of the field provided in the metropolitan area. The steering group has also approved the proposal for the curriculum. The members of the steering group include representatives of the work environment and other interest groups, students of the degree programme and staff from Metropolia.

As a basis for the development of the degree programme and the curriculum, a questionnaire was distributed to representatives of the work environment, graduated and present students, teachers of social services as well as partners in the field of research and development. Statements were requested of the key representatives of the work environment and interest groups of the proposal.
