Descriptions
Rationale of the Degree Programme
The education is based on the theoretical and applied knowledge of clinical laboratory science and other branches of science supporting it. Studies are composed of the following four themes (study modules): Basic Studies in Biomedical Laboratory Science, Laboratory Testing Process, Client and Health Care Environment and Research and Development.
Instruction is implemented with emphasis on learning assignments stemming from working life and close contacts with the world of work. The objective is for Biomedical Laboratory Technologists to command the essential knowledge base of biomedical laboratory science and the functional competence required in laboratory work within the health care sector. They are able to follow developments in their own field and introduce and develop new working methods as members of multidisciplinary teams. They are equipped to develop their own expertise and that of their working community and are able to adapt their professional competence to changes in society, within the health care and social services sector and in laboratory work.
The professional qualifications of Biomedical Laboratory Technologists comprise competence in provision of laboratory services. Information obtained through laboratory services is used to promote health, diagnose diseases, evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and develop therapeutic methods. The core tasks of Biomedical Laboratory Technologists in providing laboratory services include management of client relationships and laboratory testing processes, control and improvement of quality and operations, teaching, counselling and guidance, and other expert assignments. Biomedical Laboratory Technologists operate as experts in their own field in laboratories in primary health care and specialised medical care, in medical and biosciences research institutes and teams and in companies manufacturing and marketing health care and laboratory products.
