The Goals of the Degree Programme

The degree programme aims at training professionals for the global operational environment
providing them with relevant and a wide expertise in the field, needed in the product and sales teams.
The degree programme trains experts for the national clothing companies, department stores,
chain stores, and importing brands managed from the Helsinki capital region.

The graduates of the degree programme of culture will be awarded a bachelor’s degree in clothing and fashion. (University of Applied Sciences)

Final Thesis and Maturity Test 15 cp


Common core requirement studies comprises 98 cp.
In addition, 43 cp consist of optional studies.
Optional studies help the students to channel their expertise into a task in work life.
Optional studies are divided into the following studies:
Form and Quality control
Conceptualizing and Collection Planning as well as
Purchasing and Marketing

As a main rule, the optional studies take place every second year. Consequently, the third and the fourth year students study in the same groups in the optional studies.

The studies in the innovation project are a part of the professional studies. The project studies
are work life oriented and chosen according to the selected profile. The aim of the project studies is to
create connections outside the University of Applied Sciences as well as different communities both
domestically and abroad.

Innovation project studies consist of some of the following projects:


Co-operative projects 3-10 cp
Managing Outsourcing 0-7cp
Product Development Project 0-7op
Communications and Marketing Project 0-7op


The credit points of the innovation project consist of the individual co-operative project and optional studies closely intertwined with the project.






Elective studies expand and advance the professional skills. The studies are selected from the selection
of the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences or different Universities.

Studies from international institutes can also be a part of the optional studies or optional professional studies.

The degree programme of clothing and fashion is wide, innovative and subjected to quick changes
in compliance with the field, which reflects and forms the areas of competency each year with a professional advisory board.

Technical, ethical and business related studies are combined in the studies.
The diversity of the field is reflected in the professional studies in the field, which are divided
according to the field of competence:

Form and Quality Control
Conceptualizing and Collection Planning
Purchasing and Marketing


The professional studies provide the students with a possibility to specialize one of the aforementioned fields in the advanced studies.

The starting point of the education in the field of fashion and clothing is the interests towards people,
their dreams, wishes, and needs. The studies in the field are built on understanding the body shapes,
movement and plasticity of the human bodies. The bachelor of fashion and clothing will gain the
skills in following the trends and predict the future in the changing operating environment.
The aesthetic conceptualization and perception, seeking and applying information as well as
team work and co-operation skills. The studies develop creativity in problem solving both aesthetically and ethically in an appropriate way. Work life oriented projects, international connections, and internship play a significant role in learning.

The bachelors of clothing and fashion masters the design, production, purchasing and marketing processes in the field. In addition, they recognize the materials and choose them appropriately for the purposes of use.

Commercial insight, internal entrepreneurship and activity is needed already during the studies in order to find one’s own operating area and specialization. The bachelors of clothing and fashion will develop their competence in the following expert tasks:


Form and Quality Control


-Clothing Line Coordinator, Pattern Designer or as an expert in fitting, pattern making,
measurement taking, and manufacturing instructions in a company, which produced clothes in the
production plant or in the outsourced subcontractig company domestically or abroad.







Conceptualizing the Collection

Assistant designer, who works in a close contact with the fashion designer
The duties include collection planning and coordinating related duties e.g. determining the
colours of accessories, constructing colour maps and colouring of the models as well as
compiling and producing the material for collection design and marketing.


Purchasing and Marketing

Production coordinator designing and planning the company’s product and material flow related
quality control and logistics. The duties also include material and product testings.

Purchasing assistant. The duties include keeping in touch with the suppliers and advertising agencies
as well as preparing marketing campaigns and preparative duties related to brochures

Buyers in a store work as experts in budgeting the selection and the assortment, co-ordinating,
marketing and subcontracting.


- Marketing assistants, plan and execute the visual marketing of the company. The duties include
giving instructions for window dressing, tasks related to maintaining the regular customers.

- Importers in the agencies in the field of clothing and fashion, various collections or clothing fabric
collections. The duties include marketing including the chiefs and agents as well as developing the
brands to meet the needs of the clients.

-representatives, who are in charge of the sales of different product groups, promoting sales and marketing. The assignments include keeping in touch with clients and taking part in the product training meetings. In addition, the tasks include organizing and planning seminars and product training sessions for the merchandisers and end users.

Developing and approving the curriculum:

The future of the field was envisioned in the advisory board during the autumn 2008. Consequently, two new courses were added into the curriculum:
The Registered Trademarks of the Materials and
International Practices in the Fashion Industry.

The work load of the courses was re-evaluated and the
contents were updated. The curriculum was developed into a competence based direction as much as possible. The work continues in the autumn 2009.

The professional advisory board of clothing and fashion
approved the updated curriculum in the meeting held
23 February 2009, which was held in the premises of Seppälä Ltd in Vantaa.
