Music Educator

The studies aim to produce highly skilled music pedagogues, creative and inspirational teachers with personal visions, opinions and methods of teaching, who also can use the enriching and empowering potential of arts as a source of both well-being and improved quality of life. The key elements are learner-oriented and creative, participatory teaching approach and building fruitful surroundings, where music education meets the needs of each individual. Our aim is to coach experts ready for working life with the abilities to have significant impact on the wider community. This is realized during the studies by nurturing the professional identity both as an educator and as a musician and developing excellent competencies for working in different contexts of music education. Students deepen their own musicianship and teaching skills also by embracing a wide variety of music styles.

Music educator students study and work in challenging and diverse environments They are taking part in work life projects in a close contact with educational and cultural life in the area. In addition to music and performance studies, music educators train in pedagogy for four years. In each year students undergo teaching practice through methods of interaction and peer reflection. This includes a variety of versatile teaching methods, preparatory courses in music and didactics, the tools and approaches of the participatory music education, arts integration techniques and group-teaching methods in different teaching contexts.

As a dynamic leader in the classical field, the Metropolia Classical Music Degree Programme is continuously innovating to meet future challenges. By applying novel approaches to music pedagogy in harmony with the evolution of instrumental music tradition, the institute promotes musical performance and pedagogy in a variety of contexts. The studying process includes production of recitals, chamber music, orchestra, opera and music theatre connected to projects in schools, music institutes and social services. A key part of our approach is collaboration with the rich and varied music and cultural life in and around Helsinki through innovative R & D and working life projects.

Development

Opetussuunnitelmaan 2011 ei ole tehty muutoksia

Opetussuunnitelmien rakentaminen osaamisperustaisiksi on käynnissä koulutusohjelmassa.
Musiikin koulutusohjelman opetussuunnitelmien kehittämistyö perustuu Euroopan musiikkikorkeakoulujen liiton (AEC) julkaisemiin, Erasmus/Polifonia-verkoston määrittelemiin kansainvälisiin osaamis- ja kompetenssikuvauksiin. Koulutusohjelman uudistaa opetussuunnitelmat AEC:n raamin mukaisiksi ja osaamisperusteisiksi vuoteen 2012 mennessä. Kehittämistyötä varten on olemassa määritelty ja kuvattu prosessi, joka seuraa /jazzmusiikin koulutusohjelman vastaavaa prosessia.
