Descriptions
The Degree Programme in Music includes two bachelor's degrees: Music Educator and Musician. In the Music Educator's Degree there are two professional majors: Instrument and Vocal Teaching, and Early Childhood Music Education and Community Music. In the Musician's Degree there are two professional majors as well: Performance, and Music Writing and Production.
Instrument and vocal instructors get qualifications to work as teachers in diverse pedagogical tasks in the field of music, such as private and group tuition in an instrument, leading bands, and teaching music theory. Early childhood music educators get extensive qualifications for elementary music teaching of all stages of the life span. Community music skills are in the core of the education. Studies in music education generate vocational teacher qualification.
Instrumentalists and vocalists majoring in performance work as performers in diverse professions in the rhythm music field, such as orchestral, band, and studio musicians. Music writers and producers master composing, arranging, song-writing, and music technology. They work e.g. in music and multimedia content production, sound design, and music producions.
Because the Music Educator's degree contains 60 pts. ECTS of studies that generate vocational teacher qualification, there is no room in the curricula for a 15 or 30 pt. ECTS study module in a minor subject.
Due to the individual nature of course accomplishments in the field of arts education, all courses in the Degree Programme in Music are assessed pass/fail (excluding Bachelor's Thesis). Thus, in the course assessment criteria one can find the assignments that have to be completed in order to be credited from the course.
Development
Musiikin tutkinto-ohjelman opetussuunnitelman kehittämistyö perustuu Euroopan musiikkikorkeakoulujen liiton (AEC) julkaisemiin, Erasmus/Polifonia-verkoston määrittelemiin kansainvälisiin osaamis- ja kompetenssikuvauksiin sekä Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulu Oy:n musiikin koulutuksen linjauksiin.
Opetussuunnitelman kehittämiseen em. lähtökohdista ovat osallistuneet pedagogisen henkilökunnan lisäksi opiskelijoiden edustajat sekä ammatillinen neuvottelukunta.
Opetussuunnitelman kehittämistyön jatkamiseksi on olemassa jatkuva, määritelty ja kuvattu prosessi.

Objective
Music Educator's Degree:
At the completion of their studies, the students have the ability to promote memorable and supportive learning in music. They know how to bridge skills in art and pedagogy with learning based on learners’ strengths and interactive pedagogy. Consistent with their specialization, they manage manifold methods in music and pedagogy and possibilities of the applied use of art, and are able to work with learners of different backgrounds and ages, coaching and teaching individuals and groups.
The students understand meanings of music pedagogy and are able to justify them to learners, communities, and the society. They are capable of reflecting on their own activity and team work, as well as of interacting with professional work communities. The students understand the significance of networks in their vocational development and recognize possibilities of continuous learning as a cornerstone of changing and developing work life.
Musician's Degree:
At the completion of their studies, the students are capable of developing their own artistic visions and realizing those of others at a high level, and possess the required skills and knowledge to achieve this. They have acquired facilities to work in various genres of music in a professional and creative manner. The students have gained experience of public performances and their related duties and practices. They are able to write and perform music at a high level both as an individual and as a member of a group.
The students know how to utilize the latest technology to support and develop their own artistic expression. They can network, have familiarized themselves with the operators in the domestic and international music sectors, and have expanded their connections within the working life. The students understand the importance of good workplace and life management skills in their employment and well-being at work. They possess good project management and people skills, and are capable of applying their expert knowledge in various working environments within the music sector.
The students know how to search for and analyze information critically, how to analyze and reflect on their own and others’ behavior, and how to express themselves orally and in writing. They are able to produce and interpret musical notation and other graphic and written means of expressing music. The students perceive lines of development in music and can position their own music-making within a historical context. They understand the importance of entrepreneurial attitude in working life, the operation of the music business, copyright legislation and practices, and various procedures in the field of music involving agreements and reports.
