Profile of the programme
The goal of the Degree Programme is to train, develop, and graduate students specialising in popular music and jazz as competent and versatile music professionals: instrumentalists, music educators, music writers, and music producer/technologists, who are willing and able to develop their professional skills further and to use their creative knowledge to enrich both the Finnish and the international field of popular music and jazz.
Students who graduate from the programme will earn a Bachelor's Degree, specialising either as a Musician or a Music Educator.
Key learning outcomes
Pop and Jazz Music Educators do not only master their instrument, but can also play in a variety of styles and pass on their learning to their students, and instruct both beginners and more advanced musicians or bands in different styles of popular music and jazz.
Those studying to become teachers undergo teaching practice, and all students learn about typical situations where they appear in front of an audience, in order to become familiar with what awaits them in their work. Students specialise in teaching instrument, voice, or music theory. Music Educators can work as innovators, experts and leading characters of musical culture in their own environment.
Music Educator students do not only reach a high level of musical professionalism and complete a Bachelor's degree, but also acquire general teacher qualifications (60 ECTS credits), acknowledged by the Finnish Ministry of Education.
Pop and Jazz Musicians are skilled performers and creative professionals who are conversant with Finnish and international music scenes. Mastery of diverse social situations, command of various musical genres, the ability to produce musical materials quickly, good education, and deep knowledge of culture are nowadays more valuable than ever. The possession of these qualities gives the Pop and Jazz Musician a very good potential to work in the varied duties of the modern working life.
As a Pop and Jazz Musician, one can specialise in instrument or voice (performance), music writing, or music production and music technology. Those majoring in instrument or voice focus above all on honing their instrumental, performing, and ensemble skills. It is also possible to include max. 30 ECTS of minor subject studies in the Instrumentalist's specialisation.
Music writers concentrate on composing, arranging and songwriting, and acquire the music technology skills required by the working life. The Music producer/technologist studies are directed towards creating and producing musical material and content, mastering music engineering and technology, and managing sound productions.
Occupational profiles of graduates
Graduates of the Pop and Jazz Music Degree Programme become different kinds of experts in popular music and jazz. Students can specialise in pop, jazz, r&b, and rock styles, and receive professional qualifications as teachers of an instrument or music theory, or as performers, music writers, or music producers and technologists.
The Music Educator degree qualifies the graduates to work in diverse roles at various educational levels in the field of popular music and jazz, such as a one-to-one and group instructor of an instrument or voice, teacher of music theory and ear training, instructing ensembles, and in applied musical activities in different sectors of society. The Music Educator studies also provide the graduates with good abilities to act as performing and creative artists. Music Educators typically work in elementary music schools, in music institutes of lower vocational level, in adult education centres or as private music tutors.
Pop and Jazz Musician graduates typically work as freelancers or entrepreneurs in demanding orchestra, ensemble, or studio musicians’ duties, or as performing artists, music producers, music engineers, composers, arrangers or songwriters, depending on the chosen specialisation. Music producers/technologists can also get employed in various cultural institutions, such as theaters.
Access to further studies
Graduates can apply for master’s degree programmes in applicable universities and art colleges, and for the Master’s Degree Programme in Music at the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

Pop/jazz-musiikin koulutusohjelman lukuvuoden 2012-2013 opetussuunnitelmien ainoa rakenteellinen muutos on 4 op laajuisen uraohjausseminaarin sisällyttäminen muusikon suuntautumisvaihtoehdon instrumentalistin pääaineen ammattiopintoihin. Pääaineen ensemble-työskentelyn määrää on vastaavasti pienennetty 4 op:llä 12 opintopisteeseen.
Pop/jazz-musiikin opetussuunnitelmien opintojaksojen kuvaukset on kirjoitettu osaamisperustaisiksi. Tehty kehitystyö perustuu Euroopan konservatorioliitto AEC:n julkaisemiin, Erasmus/Polifonia-verkoston määrittelemiin kansainvälisiin osaamis- ja kompetenssikuvauksiin, joita varten opetussuunnitelmissa on myös oma kompetenssipohjainen jäsentelynsä.
Opetussuunnitelman kehittämistyön jatkamiseksi pop/jazz-musiikin koulutusohjelmassa on olemassa jatkuva, määritelty ja kuvattu prosessi.
