Descriptions

Metropolia University of Applied Sciences
Degree Programme in Film and Television
Bachelor of Culture and Arts (Media)

The competence and knowledge gained in the degree programme

The goal of the degree programme is to provide the students with professional competence in different fields of content production and thus give the needed qualifications for the students to become independent and co-operative professionals. A further aim is to
provide the students with necessary tools for postgraduate studies as well as skills required for maintaining and developing the acquired professional competence in different work environments. The students learn to integrate both theory and practice in different fields and will gain the competence to successfully develop their field of specialization in the project centered and problem based learning.

The degree programme has five fields of specialization.
Those fields form a whole, which offers the students the possibility to learn content production for various needs, purposes and media.

The degree programme consists of 240 credit points. The studies consist of the obligatory core requirement studies; professional studies, which vary according to the field of specialization; elective studies and the final thesis. The studies also include an internship of 30 credit points.

The obligatory core requirement studies provide the students with theoretical tools to master the history, research traditions, operating environment, and the concepts in the field. The students comprehend the ethical, legal, and societal principals and their meaning in the field. Skills in seeking and analyzing information, general knowledge in the field as well as the necessary command of foreign languages, knowing societal and economic connections, business operating models as well as domestic and international operating environments serve as pre-requisites for professional development and postgraduate studies.

In the professional studies, the students take up the courses in the field of specialization selected early on. The students focus on expression, form, ways of narration and learn to master the production processes, work methods, and professional techniques in each field of specialization. Teaching is carried out partly as projects, in which co-operation and project management are practiced. Therefore, the graduates create new contents and media concepts and can successfully market and sell their own skills.

The students prove in the final thesis how they can work independently, solve problems, and use investigative methods. The goal of the final thesis is to serve as a work life oriented practical project,
demonstration or a documentation. A final thesis always comprises a written study. The work can be conducted alone or in groups.

The graduates work in designing, executing, developing, or managing tasks or as consults and entrepreneurs in the field.

Some study entities are common for the students specializing in image and editing, scriptwriting, production, and sound. At the early stages, the students focus on cinematic storytelling, audiovisual production, its different parts and fundamentals of the technology. The advanced specialization studies consist of fiction and documentary productions.
