Objectives of the specialization
To train public health nurses who possess the necessary knowledge and skills to promote and uphold as well as prevent illness in individuals, families, work and other communities, and the population and environment at large, whilst capitalizing on the strengths of clients and self-care. The perspective adopted is a preventive and promotional one, which indicates practicing constructive health care measures that create the preconditions for healthy living and support health. Nursing care affects individual, communal and social well-being. Competence in nursing care, public health nursing and especially health promotion is advanced during the studies. The education prepares for functioning as a public health nurse and expert multifaceted and professional work groups that promote health, safety and well-being. The main aim is to achieve evidence-based public health expertise, the ability and courage to identify with and intervene in the client´s situation during various phases of life. Competence is enhanced in nursing and public health working environments. Learning is based on the constructive collaboration of the student, the representatives of the working environment and the teachers, where existing practices are developed and new working methods are produced.

The curriculum is modular in structure, and it consists of nine themes, which are dispersed over the academic years. Each theme focuses on core competence areas of professional significance. Moreover, each theme provides a theoretical framework determining its central learning content. They are developed, deepened and integrated throughout the studies. During each clinical practice, professional competence related to the ongoing theme is reinforced. In each module, the completion of theoretical studies is a prerequisite for clinical practice placement, and they must be completed according to the chronological order stated in the curriculum.
