Objective
Students learn how to apply work methods supporting early interaction with the newborn and parenting. They identify and support early interaction between the newborn baby and parents as well as parents’ ability to care for the baby. Students can also identify and discuss issues related to pregnancy, childbirth and the baby as well as parents’ possible difficulties and worries. Students are able to support parents’ problem-solving skills. They can provide breastfeeding counselling in accordance with the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative Programme and they can support the mother’s self-confidence and parenthood as well as resources to breastfeed. Students realise the role of the spouse in supporting breastfeeding and help him to find means to promote breastfeeding. They identify activities increasing parents’ wellbeing, coping and mutual interaction.
Content
Breastfeeding counselling education according to the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative Programme;
initiation of breastfeeding,
normal breastfeeding, effective attachment,
first breastfeeding, skin contact,
breastfeeding positioning,
identification of risks,
baby’s suckling problems,
problems in lactation,
contraindications for breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers,
early interaction in education of families with newborn.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Students are familiar with the guidelines, recommendations and acts on breastfeeding counselling.
Students are familiar with the anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding.
Students know how to plan, implement and evaluate the breastfeeding counselling of a pregnant woman, a woman who has given birth and her family.
Students are able to support breastfeeding and thus increase the health, wellbeing and resources of the family.
Students are familiar with the multiprofessional networks of breastfeeding counselling and know various health promotion methods in the breastfeeding counselling of a pregnant woman, a woman who has given birth and her family.
Students comprehend the significance of early interaction.
Students realise the role of the spouse in supporting breastfeeding and help him to find means to promote breastfeeding.
Students identify activities increasing parents’ wellbeing, coping and mutual interaction.

Students understand the anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding. Students can plan, implement and evaluate the breastfeeding counselling of the pregnant mother, mother given birth and family. Students are able to support the family in the breastfeeding process and hence promote the health, wellbeing and resources of the family. Students are familiar with multiprofessional networks of breastfeeding as well as are familiar with and utilise various methods of health promotion in the breastfeeding counselling of the pregnant mother, mother given birth and family. Students are able to plan, implement and evaluate family’s breastfeeding counselling sessions independently.

Students master the central guidelines, recommendations and statutes related to breastfeeding counselling, understand their significance and are able to apply them to breastfeeding counselling. Students understand and master the anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding as well as know how to apply this knowledge to breastfeeding counselling individually. Students can plan, implement and evaluate the breastfeeding counselling of the pregnant mother, mother given birth and family safely and in a client-oriented manner as well as are able to support the family in the breastfeeding process individually and hence support their health, wellbeing and resources. Students are familiar with and utilise the major multiprofessional networks of breastfeeding as well as master and apply various methods of health promotion to the breastfeeding counselling of the pregnant mother, mother given birth and family individually and from a client-oriented perspective. Students can plan, implement and evaluate family’s breastfeeding counselling sessions on an individual basis and from a client-oriented perspective as well as develop their competence in breastfeeding counselling.
