Graduates who complete the degree program in nursing, are educated to become competent in evidence based nursing. In addition to health promotion and illness prevention, nursing practice involves care, support, guidance and rehabilitation of people with various health problems as well as their significant others. Furthermore, nursing practice involves care and support of the dying and of their significant others. Competent performance of a nurse is based on updated knowledge of nursing science, as well as on complementary knowledge of biologic, social and physical sciences. The fundamental competencies embrace the ability to gather and critically analyze information, and to apply this information in nursing practice, as well as in its evaluation and development.
Studies lead to readiness to plan, implement, evaluate and develop nursing care in collaboration with clients / patients of different ages as well as with their significant others. Emphasis is placed on reinforcement of individual and family resources in life transitions, in crisis, and during illness. Studies lead to competencies in provision of basic and specialist care in diverse nursing settings. In addition, graduates will be cabable of responding to immediate needs of patients requiring specialized care in rapidly changing situations. Furthermore, they will possess competecies to participate in, to coordinate and to develop team- and network capabilities.
The curriculum is modular in structure, and it consists of nine themes, which are dispersed over the academic years. Each theme focuses on core competence areas of professional significance. Moreover, each theme provides a theoretical framework determining its central learning content. They are developed, deepened and integrated throughout the studies. During each clinical practice, professional competence related to the ongoing theme is reinforced. In each module, the completion of theoretical studies is a prerequisite for clinical practice placement, and they must be completed according to the chronological order stated in the curriculum.

The core curriculum for the degree program is discussed with the advisory board on regular basis. This year the issue was on the agenda for the meeting held on January 21st 2009. As in the past, due to the signifigance of domestic language skills in nursing practice, the advisory board emphasised the necessity of keeping the basic Finnish language skills requirement as a criteria for entry to the degree program. Furthermore, Finnish language instruction is to remain as an integral part of the syllabus for non-native Finnish speaking students. The trans- and multicultural aspects of nursing and health now present in the core curriculum as well as in the classroom, were considered important for all students as well as for the working life.
