Workplacement(s) and Work-based Learning

The curriculum of the Bachelor of Fashion and Clothing degree includes 30 ECTS of practical training carried out in clothing enterprises in Finland or abroad. It is the students' own responsibility to find a practical training place, and the parties will sign a training agreement. The student is expected to report on their training period in accordance with the instructions provided. In addition to the practical training period, the student's work experience is increased through working life project studies. Furthermore, the Bachelor’s Thesis (15 ECTS) is always carried out as an industry-initiated development task.

Qualification requirements and regulations

In the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing the qualification requirements and regulations follow the general Degree Regulations of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, available soon in English language on the page General Information on Studies (address https://metropolia.fi/en/academics/general-information-on-studies)

According to the Degree Regulations the student can be granted a degree certificate once she/he has completed all the studies that make up the degree. The degree certificate includes the name of the degree and degree programme, extent of the degree, degree title, and the student's language proficiency.
The degree includes the following studies: core requirement studies (9 ECTS), professional studies in fashion and clothing (128 ECTS), profiling professional studies selected by the student (48 ECTS), elective studies (10 ECTS), work placement (30 ECTS), and Bachelor’s Thesis (15 ECTS). To be able to graduate the student has had to pass her/his studies according to the curriculum and the general qualification requirements.

Access to further studies

The students who have graduated from the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing can apply for further studies in the field of fashion and clothing. These include Master's studies or specialisation studies in universities of applied sciences or Master's studies at a research university, according to the eligibility criteria of each higher education institution.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

According to the Degree Regulations of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences students may apply for identification and accreditation of prior learning as part of their compulsory or optional studies, provided they have prior learning corresponding to the curriculum before the course in question begins.

Profile of the programme

The Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is a top educator in its field as a developer of the industry, in an environment of international learning, and as a Nordic partner.
The degree programme:
- prepares specialists with wide expertise for fashion retail and apparel industry
- provides comprehensive management skills in apparel processes
- provides the possibility to profile into Collection and Concept Design or alternatively into Form and Quality Management Studies from the perspective of fashion industry.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Through the special knowledge the Bachelors of Fashion and Clothing have acquired during their studies, they can work in the domestic and international clothing industry as a cooperative, communicative, and initiative-making professional.
The field of work of the Bachelor of Fashion and Clothing can be in international purchasing teams, fashion and clothing industry and service design companies. She/he can work for instance as a master pattern maker, measurer, pattern coordinator, collection designer, buyer, importer, representative, marketing coordinator, or a subcontracting supervisor, according to her/his profile. Often the career begins as an assistant or a secretary on an aforementioned area.

Key learning outcomes

The Bachelors of Culture and Arts, specialized in Fashion and Clothing have a wide expertise in the field of fashion. They know the fashion industry inside-out, covering the whole production chain of the apparel branch. The starting point for educating Bachelors of Fashion and Clothing is to teach the total control of the clothing industry processes. This is absorbed already during the studies in the degree programme through versatile industry cooperation and assignments. The Bachelor of Fashion and Clothing can collect information and use it to problem solving in various practical situations.
The Bachelors of Fashion and Clothing have a good command of planning collections and assortments. They know materials and have a good command of the patterns and quality of garments and the manufacturing of apparel. In addition, the Bachelors of Fashion and Clothing have good marketing and business skills and are prepared to forecast future trends. They understand the corporate responsibility of the industry and the meaning of service concepts in their line of business. They also have the special IT skills required by the clothing industry and good team and project skills.
Studies in the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing are working life oriented and international. Interdisciplinary and working life oriented co-operation and development projects enable the students to become familiar with the customs and possibilities of the working life. The annual projects and events of the degree programme ensure that the education is up-to-date and develop the students' skills in the specific requirements of the field as well as their interdisciplinary skills.
Moreover, the core competences of universities of applied sciences in Finland have been included in the curriculum of the degree programme (ARENE, Rectors' Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences, 2010): learning skills, ethics, work community skills, innovation know-how, international competences.

The studies (240 ECTS) are completed in accordance with the curriculum.

Obligatory or Optional Mobility

The students have an option to take up courses during a student exchange period in our partner schools in the international network. In general, students of Fashion and Clothing may apply for international exchange for one term, but another time period is also possible upon agreement. The student applies for the exchange period in accordance with the instructions provided. The degree programme will support the exchange application if the student has shown sufficient study progress and their graduation will not be delayed due to the exchange. The credits completed during the exchange period will replace a set of previously agreed studies at Metropolia. Each academic year, students from partner universities around the world will study at the degree programme of Fashion and Clothingas exchange students.

Specific admission requirements

There are no specific admission requirements for youth education to the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing. All qualified applicants who have passed the three-year curriculum of upper secondary school education or vocational upper secondary education are eligible to apply to the degree programme. The Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing uses entrance examinations for student selections. The entrance examinations emphasise the applicants' varied skills in the field of fashion and clothing. The staff of the degree programme evaluates accordingly the applicants' possible skills and capacities to profile later in their studies either to collection and concept design studies or alternatively to form and quality management studies from the viewpoint of the fashion and clothing business.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. At the beginning of the course, students must be informed on the assessment principles which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.
The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P). Any deviations of this scale will be decided by the President.

Mode of study

The studies are full-time studies. The studies in the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing are offered mainly as daytime studies.
