Descriptions

The degree program provides the student with versatile skills in music and the ability and qualification to use their expertise in a wide range of tasks as performers, music educators and experts. According to their professional orientation, the student can focus on a subject that is artistic, pedagogic or combining these two areas of expertise.

Even if the program is regarded as full-time studying, it is realized in a way that makes it possible to combine and integrate studies with work. The program is intended for experienced professionals, that have found a need to cultivate their own expertise, the professional field in general and maybe also their work community. Ideas that spring out of these needs form the basis of the final thesis (30 credits). The advanced professional studies (18 credits) aim to give the student abilities to act in different development tasks and understand factors behind work community behaviour. These studies form also a common platform for professional reflection and development. The elective studies (12 credits) are designed through an individual tutoring process, promoting the students professional profile and the working process of the final thesis.

As the education is an adult education program intended for experienced professionals of their field, mentoring and different forms of informal learning are central factors in the pedagogic design of the courses. Being aware of the multitude of different professional roles a musician's or music educator's career can include, it is close to impossible to determine in advance the different development needs that rise from the students’ work experience. Instead of narrow and predefined study orientations, the design of the program content is based on a continuous dialogue between the working life, student and institution. The objective is to stress the importance of individual tutoring and the process-nature of learning. This means that the curriculum gives space to individual emphasis and strives to an integrated approach rather than a tight academic division of courses and subjects.

The general objectives of the program, which are individually weighted according to the student’s professional orientation and subject of the final thesis, are:
- to widen the career possibilities and professional roles of musicians and music pedagogues
- to articulate tacit knowledge of the profession in order to be able to share, apply and evolve work experience based knowledge
- to identify the students own strengths and reinforce the individual teacher/artist identity
- to promote skills and understanding needed in developing production processes as a whole
- to diversify pedagogical and artistic working methods and repertoire
- to strengthen skills and understanding needed in developing institutions and work communities
- to develop the training of conservatoire/music school teachers by educating specialised didactic teachers
