3 ECTS

Objective

This course gives to student the most important knowledge about electricity,
magnetism and electromagnetic induction.

Content

Electrostatic field (electric charge, Coulomb’s law, electric field, resistive and conductive materials, electric forces, potential and voltage, capacitance and capacitors, capacitors in series and in parallel)
Direct-current circuits (current and resistivity, Ohm’s law, energy and power in electric circuits, Kirchoff’s rules, resistors in series and in parallel, resistive sensors, measurement of voltage and current, electrical measuring instruments)
Electromagnetic induction (magnetic field, Faraday’s law, Lenz’s law,
generator, mutual inductance, Eddy currents, transformer)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is familiar with the basic concepts of electricity and magnetism and with their interdependence. He/she understands the basic phenomena in the field. He knows how to solve simple problems related to electricity and magnetism.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Besides the above, the student is capable of applying the fundamental laws of electricity, magnetism and electromagnetic induction to less simple problems. He knows how to explain the basic phenomena in the field from the first principles.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the aforementioned requirements the student is also capable of solving more challenging problems that require applying the concepts and methods of various different topics simultaneously. He is also capable of dealing with novel problems that significantly differ from the ones examined during the course. Furthermore, the student is capable of presenting the solutions to the problems in a logical and coherent manner, thus demonstrating that he/she has a deeper understanding on the contents of the course.
