Objective
The student knows the significance of food safety throughout the food supply chain (from the primary production to the consumer). The student is able to describe the main features of the food safety policy (legislation, authorities) in Finland and EU.
Content
1. Food safety policy, Food safety authorities, food legislation in Finland and EU.
2. The quality of foodstuffs, food safety (chemical and biological), genetically modified food, novel foods.
3. The main features of the food legislation.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1. The student is familiar with the main features of the food safety policy (legislation, authorities) in Finland and EU.
2. The student understands the significance of food safety throughout the food supply chain. The student can describe what is meant by the genetically modified food, novel foods and the chemical and biological safety of foodstuffs.
3. The student is able to seek information on the food legislation. S/he can describe the main features of the content of the food legislation.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
1. The student can describe food safety policy and food safety authorities in Finland as well as in EU.
2. The student understands profoundly and can take a stance on what is meant by food safety. The student can describe what is meant by biological and chemical food safety as well as by GM foods and novel foods. The student knows something about novel foods which have the trading license.
3. The student can seek information concerning the food legislation. He/she has a good knowledge about the content of valid food legislation.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
1. The student knows well the food legislation and food safety authorities in Finland and in EU.
2. The student understands profoundly and can take a stance on that what is meant by food safety. The student has good knowledge about the biological and chemical risks in foods. He/she also knows products in categories of novel foods and foods with health claims which have the trading license. The student knows what is happening in the field of GM food legislation.
3. The student knows profoundly the Finnish food legislation. He/she also has knowledge about the current issues and problems concerning the food legislation.
