Music Mastering 1Laajuus (3 ECTS)

Objective

After completing the course, the student will know the working methods and possibilities of the mastering process in audio production. The student will be able to produce technically and artistically balanced recording compilations.

Content

The history and development of record production and mastering process. Equalization, dynamics control and basic editing in mastering. Compiling a cd premaster. The basics of mastering in different music styles.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
• attends lessons
• understands the workflow of the mastering process and the use of the most important mastering tools
• knows the basics of equalization, dynamics procesing, editing and how to compile a CD master

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition, the student:
• understands how the whole recording proces affects mastering
• knows how to use mastering tools, including multiband compression

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition, the student:
• knows how to make good mastering choices appropriate to different styles of music
• knows how to use advanced mastering processing, such as tape simulation and reverb effects
