Objective

The student is introduced to working methods and practices of a recording studio as well as to the job titles, job descriptions and hierarchy of studio personnel. The student introduces him/herself to professional terminology and equipment. The student gains familiarity with the structures of production and the stages of its progress from the recording engineer's point of view.
The student learns to influence production content autonomously, by making the right choices in the recording process and by co-operating productively with musicians, conductors, band leaders and producers. The student learns to make high-grade recordings of large ensemble instrumental and vocal performances, both from an artistic and technical point of view.

Content

- Job descriptions of a music producer, arranger, conductor / band leader and a sound engineer
- Musical score reading
- Comprehensive operational use of studio equipment and possibilities of use
- Processing of sequenced tracks
- Professional-level autonomous recording of a larger ensemble (Big Band, choir) in studio or concert hall
- Pre-planning of and preparing for recording situations
- Combining sequenced and acoustic/live tracks

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student:
• has participated in class
• is able to record the playing and singing performances of large orchestras and choirs
• is able to independently influence the technical content of large musical productions through technical choices in recording, and is capable of productive collaboration with musicians, conductors and producers
• has completed the agreed assignments, including the processing of computer-based comp tracks, as well as the independently accomplished professional level recording of a large ensemble (big band or choir)
