Basics of Ensemble PlayingLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Objective

Students are familiar with playing in a band using the most common band instruments: bass, guitar, drums and keyboard instruments. Students gain fundamental skills and knowledge in most common rhythmical, harmonic and voicing (clang) elements of band playing. Students learn to perceive the role and the function of each band instrument and learn to use each instrument so that they are able to change from one instrument to another while playing the basic pop-rock material.

Content

Basics of band instrument playing techniques – communication with other band players – different roles while changing the instruments – knowledge of amplifiers and effect devices – singing while playing.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
• has participated in teaching
• has completed the agreed arranging and performing tasks
• is competent in communication skills in ensemble playing situations
• is able to use the most common band instruments, including bass, guitar, drums and keyboards
• is competent with basic knowledge and skills of band playing and knows the most commonly used rhythmic, harmonic and sonic elements
• understands the role and importance of each band instrument when building up a band sound
• understands each instrument in the band, so that he/she is able to switch smoothly to another instrument while playing basic repertoire

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student:
• can manage microphone singing and the use of audio equipment
• is able to make arrangements for small ensemble

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
• can manage the use of effects devices
• is able to run and lead the band playing situation

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student:
• has participated in teaching
• has completed the agreed arranging and performing tasks
• is competent in communication skills in ensemble playing situations
• is able to use the most common band instruments, including bass, guitar, drums and keyboards
• is competent with basic knowledge and skills of band playing and knows the most commonly used rhythmic, harmonic and sonic elements
• understands the role and importance of each band instrument when building up a band sound
• understands each instrument in the band, so that he/she is able to switch smoothly to another instrument while playing basic repertoire
