Mental Health and Substance AbuseLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Objective

Students understand both societal and individual factors affecting mental health and substance abuse. Students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to promoting mental health and to preventing and alleviating the harms of substance abuse. Students understand the importance of empowerment as a work approach.

Content

Mental health and use of substances as a historical, cultural and societal phenomenon. Substances and theories on addiction. Legislation, services and main treatment programmes relevant to mental health and substance abuse work. Early intervention strategies and care process in substance abuse work. Working with family members and the role of peer support. Ethical issues and work with mental health and substance abuse problems.
