Objective
Students can define different effect mechanisms of medicines and master basics of the pharmacokinetics. They are able to recall the main categories of medicinal substances and their characteristics. Students acquaint themselves with the basic information on ocular medicines and their use, effect mechanisms and possible side effects. They can apply their knowledge to the use of diagnostic medicines in their work as optometrists.
Content
Effect mechanisms of medicines, pharmacokinetics and safety of medicines; medicines affecting the peripheral and central nervous system, circulatory and respiratory systems; medicines affecting salt balance, metabolism and gastrointestinal tract; vitamins and hormones; medicines used in endocrinology; antimicrobial and antiparasitic medicines; allergy medicines; chemotherapy medicines and immunopharmacology; ways to administer ocular medicines and absorption of locally administered medicines through the cornea; medicines affecting the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system; hyperosmotic medicines, products for dry eyes; antihistamines, anti-inflammatory medicines; dyes; medicines used in local anaesthesia; medicines used for treating glaucoma; antibiotics and sulpha drug, antiviral and antifungal medicines; effects of medication used in systemic diseases on the eye and its function.
