Objective
The work placement aims to promote professional skills and forms a key part of the Laboratory Testing Process module within the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science. Work placements are completed in clinical chemistry or haematology laboratories or at blood centres in at least two of the above-mentioned areas of laboratory work, depending on the opportunities available. Work placements provide competencies in provision of laboratory services in general and for laboratory testing processes in clinical chemistry, haematology and transfusion medicine in particular. The key aspect is to understand the significance of clinical chemistry and haematology tests as well as those relating to transfusion medicine to treatment of patients and to be able to provide patients and clients with counselling and guidance. The objective is for students to gain practice in taking, handling and analysing laboratory samples and to familiarise themselves with the principles of equipment and techniques and with quality control.
