Clinical Histology and CytologyLaajuus (8 ECTS)

Course unit code: SB00AA25

General information

Credits
8 ECTS

Objective

Students recognise the significance of pathology to histological and cytological diagnostics of diseases and to treatment of patients. They identify general pathology phenomena in the human body and the most typical pathological changes specific to different organs. They recognise different tissue and cell types based on histological cell morphology and can distinguish between normal and atypical cells in key sample types according to the criteria of malignancy. Students justify the significance of clinical histology and cytology tests to treating patients, diagnosing diseases and monitoring treatment. They are familiar with the basic histological and cytological tests and their indications, know how to perform these tests and understand the role of different working phases as part of high-quality treatment. They explain the significance of autopsies to determining the cause of death. They use pathology information systems and apply the principles of the quality system and occupational health and safety in clinical pathology.

Content

Principles of work: current legislation and occupational safety, quality management, knowledge of information technology
General and organ pathology: normal cell morphology, normal tissue structure, cell damage, adaptation and death; tumours, special characteristics of diseases of different organs
Histology: sampling techniques, processing tissue samples, rapid section techniques, basic staining techniques and the most common diagnostic stains, immunohistochemistry, applications of molecular pathology
Cytology: sampling techniques, cytological preparation techniques, basic staining techniques; normal morphology of key cell types and identification of typical cell findings; criteria of malignancy
Autopsy activities: medical and forensic autopsies.

Qualifications

Prerequisites: Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology; Medical Studies; Laboratory Techniques, Supplies and Working Methods; Mathematics

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

They use pathology information systems and apply the principles of the quality system and occupational health and safety in clinical pathology.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students recognise the significance of pathology to histological and cytological diagnostics of diseases and to treatment of patients to a good standard.
They distinguish the theory behind general pathology phenomena in the human body and the most typical pathological changes specific to different organs to a good standard.
They recognise different cell types to a good standard based on cell morphology and can clearly distinguish between normal and atypical cells in key sample types according to the criteria of malignancy.
Students clearly justify the significance of clinical histology and cytology tests to treating patients, diagnosing diseases and monitoring treatment.
They are very familiar with the basic histological and cytological tests and their indications, know how to perform these tests to a good standard and understand reliably the role of different working phases as part of high-quality treatment.
They apply the principles of the quality system and occupational health and safety in clinical pathology to a good standard.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students recognise the significance of pathology to histological and cytological diagnostics of diseases and to treatment of patients to an excellent standard.
They distinguish the theory behind general pathology phenomena in the human body and the most typical pathological changes specific to different organs in detail.
They recognise different cell types to an excellent standard based on cell morphology and can positively distinguish between normal and atypical cells in key sample types according to the criteria of malignancy.
Students thoroughly justify the significance of clinical histology and cytology tests to treating patients, diagnosing diseases and monitoring treatment.
They are extremely familiar with the basic histological and cytological tests and their indications, know how to perform these tests to an excellent standard and understand reliably the role of different working phases as part of high-quality treatment.
They apply the principles of the quality system and occupational health and safety in clinical pathology to an excellent standard.
