Descriptions
Biomedical Laboratory Technologist
The education is based on theoretical and applied knowledge of clinical laboratory science and other branches of science supporting it. Instruction is implemented with emphasis on close contacts with the world of work and an operational culture of R&D-based learning. Knowledge, experience, action and discussion about these play a key role in learning. Theoretical knowledge provides conceptual tools to understand and analyse practice. The University of Applied Sciences and the world of work design learning environments together with a view to making use of the competencies of students, workplace instructors and teachers in creating new knowledge and developing new practices.
The learning process starts with the drawing up of an individual study plan (ISP) for each student. The student’s prior learning is taken into account when drawing up the individual study plan (RPL = recognition of prior learning). The study plan is drawn up with the aid of the competence-based curriculum for the Degree Programme, which defines the competences required of Biomedical Laboratory Technologists. Competences are made up of annual themes, which describe development of a Biomedical Laboratory Technologist’s competences during the programme. The course-specific objectives indicate the types of competences that students are expected to obtain. The objectives help them to assess their own competences and guide their future learning. A skills demonstration will be organised to assess students’ competences at the end of each annual theme.
Competences of Biomedical Laboratory Technologists
The competences acquired during the education correspond to the level descriptors of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and to Level 6 of the National Framework for Qualifications and Other Learning (National Qualifications Framework, NQF), as well as to the generic competences of polytechnic graduates (www.arene.fi), the subject-specific competences for the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science (www.ncp.fi/ects) and the professional competences for Biomedical Laboratory Technologists as defined in the Finnish-language publication entitled ‘From polytechnic to a health care profession’ (Ammattikorkeakoulusta terveydenhuoltoon, http://www.minedu.fi/OPM/Julkaisut/2006/Ammattikorkeakoulusta_terveydenhuoltoon.htm l).
A Biomedical Laboratory Technologist possesses solid and comprehensive competence in clinical laboratory work, development and assessment and the capability for continuous learning. A Biomedical Laboratory Technologist possesses comprehensive knowledge of the clinical laboratory field, involving a critical understanding and appraisal of theories, key concepts, methods and principles. He/she understands the extent and boundaries of his/her professional functions.
A Biomedical Laboratory Technologist applies knowledge of his/her own professional field, makes decisions in unpredictable situations and solves problems creatively in his/her own field. He/she is able to manage professional activities and is capable of working independently in expert duties in the field and of taking responsibility for development of other individuals and groups, as well as for assessment and development of his/her own competence.
A Biomedical Laboratory Technologist is capable of continuous learning and of assessment of his/her own competences and those of the working community. He/she knows how to communicate verbally and in writing and is capable of communicating independently at an international level and of interacting in both national languages and at least one foreign language.
Biomedical Laboratory Technologists work in expert assignments in their own field in various laboratories within the health care sector, in medical and biosciences research institutes and teams and in companies manufacturing and marketing health care and laboratory products.
Development of a Biomedical Laboratory Technologist’s professional competences during the programme
The studies consist of four annual themes:
• Orientation to Biomedical Laboratory Science (Year I)
• Practice in Biomedical Laboratory Science 1 (Year II)
• Practice in Biomedical Laboratory Science 2 (Year III)
• Competence and Development in Biomedical Laboratory Science (Year IV)
The subject-specific professional competences of a Biomedical Laboratory Technologist consist of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical competences in the laboratory testing process, biomedical competence, as well as quality, customer service, guidance and counselling, working community, development and internationalisation competences. The course-specific competences according to annual themes have been described in a separate competence matrix.
Degree
Students on the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science complete the Polytechnic Degree in Health Care and Social Sciences (Bachelor of Health Care and Social Sciences), graduating with the degree title Biomedical Laboratory Technologist (bioanalyytikko (AMK)). The scope of the studies is 210 credits and the duration of the programme is 3.5 years.
Licence to practise a health care profession
The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (VALVIRA) grants the right to practise a health care profession as a Biomedical Laboratory Technologist. The University of Applied Sciences will submit a licence application on behalf of a student to VALVIRA once the student has demonstrated that he or she fulfils the professional competence requirements set for Biomedical Laboratory Technologists and has completed the studies (210 credits) required for the degree to an acceptable standard.
Development
