Objective

Students understand the meaning of microbiology for nurses, emergency nurses, midwives and public health nurses and knows how to cut the chain of infection. Students know how to apply their knowledge of microbiology and asepsis in their work. Students perceive clinical laboratory science as part of health care and familiarize themselves with most the common clinical laboratory examinations and the factors that affect their validity.

Normal flora and its significance to sampling, normal flora of skin and mucosa
Routes of transmission and infectious diseases, interrupting the chain of infections
Pathogenesis of infectious diseases
Basics in microbiological sampling: bacterial, virus, fungal and parasite samples
Clinical laboratory examinations as part of health care
Laboratory processes and quality control: preanalysis, analysis and postanalysis
Essential laboratory examinations of clinical physiology, haematology and chemistry and their significance
