Objective

The students cope in everyday and professional communication situations and are able to ask and answer questions in common service situations as well as give basic personal information. The students identify differences in the customs and communication strategies of their mother tongue and the target language. They recognize and use the basic grammatical structures and politeness expressions of the language.

The students identify the different Japanese orthographies and their uses. They can read and write Hiragana characters, identify Kanji characters related to numbers and expressions of time, and give basic personal information using Katakana characters.

The students can place Japanese cultural phenomena into the correct historical and cultural contexts.

Content

The students practise grammatical structures, pronunciation, characters, and listening comprehension, and participate in communicative exercises in pairs and small groups. They also familiarize themselves with Japanese customs and cultural history.

Qualifications

No pre-requisite studies.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student can identify the different Japanese writing systems. The student can read and write at least 50% of Hiragana characters. The student can introduce himself/herself and express basic things about himself/herself.
