Objective
The student will recognize the influence of the properties of the material on the properties of a product made of the material. The student will be familiar with the most important technical materials and the special properties of the main construction material groups. The student will also be familiar with the major tests for materials. The student will understand the role of material testing in selection of materials. Further, the student will be able to analyse the stress and deformation of a load-bearing building component with a computer application.
Content
Major construction materials, basic structure of materials, material testing, properties and environmental endurance of materials. Mechanisms causing material damage. Basics in material selection and design. Computer applications in analysis of deformation and stress of load-bearing structures.
New technical materials. Development of new construction materials: emphasis and future impacts. Aims of material development and demands of sustainable development.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student is able to classify materials according to structure. The student is familiar with material testing and test results. The student is familiar with the properties of the most common construction materials. The student completes assignments satisfactorily.

The student is able to classify materials according to structure and knows the special properties caused by structure. The student is familiar with material testing and applying test results. The student hands in carefully completed assignments on time.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student is able to classify materials according to structure and knows the special properties caused by structure. The student is familiar with material testing as well as applying and evaluating test results. The student is familiar with the applications of quantities describing material properties. The student is able to apply test results in the selection of materials and components. The student hands in carefully completed assignments on time.
