Objective

The student will be familiar with the language usage of meetings and negotiations and will be able to present his or her viewpoint at meetings and negotiations. The student will be able to write a project report on a field-specific topic and give an oral presentation on a project. He or she will be able to acquire information from reliable sources in his or her field and use the information in his or her own texts. He or she will be able to write an abstract for an academic paper. He or she will be familiar with the field-specific terminology and language usage related to his or her specialization option and will understand the main content of field-specific texts.

Content

Language usage of meetings and negotiations.
Basics of writing a project report in English: language usage, style, structure.
Reporting on a project orally and in writing.
Basics of academic English and writing an abstract for an academic paper.
Critical use of English source material.
Field-specific terminology and language usage related to the student’s specialization option.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Language skills on B2 level. Self-evaluation and practical language skills are satisfactory.

Reading skills: the student knows field-specific terminology in a satisfactory way; knows strategies which enable understanding of complex grammatical structures and terminology; identifies relevant texts and source material; knows how to compile a list of references; knows how to evaluate the reliability of a source in a satisfactory way

Writing skills: the student knows the principles of composing a formal report based on source material in a satisfactory way; knows how to compile a list of references in a satisfactory way; knows how source material should be referred to; knows how to write a short abstract for the thesis in a satisfactory way

Speaking: the student knows how to make a presentation based on the formal report and to present it in a satisfactory way; knows how to express opinions both in a formal and an informal meeting; knows the basic language of meetings and negotiations in a satisfactory way

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Active proficiency and passive language skills clearly on B2 level. Self-evaluation skills and practical language skills are good.

Reading skills: the student understands field-specific terminology well; knows strategies which enable understanding even of complex texts well; identifies relevant texts and source material well; knows how to compile a list of references well; is able to evaluate the reliability of a source well

Writing skills: the knows how to compose a formal style report based on source material well; knows how to compile a list of references well; knows how to use in-text references well; knows well how to write an abstract for the thesis well

Speaking: the student knows how to make a presentation based on the formal report and present it well; presents opinions and ideas appropriately in a meeting well; knows the language of formal and informal meetings and negotiations well

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Active proficiency and passive language skills clearly on C1 level.The student is able to evaluate his / her language skills and apply them in practice proficiently

Reading skills: the student understands field-specific terminology very well; knows several strategies which help in understanding complex texts; is able to identify and use relevant texts and source material very well; knows how to compile a professional list of references; is able to evaluate the relliablility of a source very well

Writing skills: the student knows how to compose a fluent formal style report based on source material; knows how to compile a list of references very well; knows how to use in-text references; knows how to write a good abstract for the thesis

Speaking: the student knows how to make and give a professional presentation based on the formal report; presents opinions and ideas appropriately in a meeting; knows the language of formal and informal meetings and negotiations very well
