Descriptions
Background of the construction Industry
Construction is the action to improve, conserve, and renew the living environment, in such a way that it fulfils our physical, social and mental requirements. The built environment is our largest natural asset, and in addition is has a major effect on our well being, transportation, economic and social development, preservation of our cultural environment, quality of life and our natural environment.
High quality, health, suitability, security and functionality are the values for the design, construction, and maintenance of our built environment. Equally important values are pleasant surroundings, environmental friendliness, esthetic quality and building heritage and the development of ecological building culture. The principles guidng the construction industry are environmental knowledge, ecological life cycling, and responsibility as well as the livelihood of the natural environment.
The construction business emphasizes the client, business success, sustainable development, entrepeneurship and healthy competition as well as service and product quality. Other values and principles are trust, honesty and workmanship, as well as responsibilty for safety, staff development and well being.
The construction industry has wide cooperation among its' partners. Networking and successful cooperation in both domestic and international projects are based on respect for the client, knowledge of other cultures and their traditions, as well as equality and empathy.
The leadership of the construction industry emphasize professional ethics, justice, equality, responsibility and continuous education and professional pride.
Goals of the Civil engineering degree programmes
Civil engineering is based on applications of the natural laws of physics and chemistry. Mathematics, physics and chemistry form the basic foundation for civil engineering education, these subjects are given special attention. In addition, knowledge of building materials and their characteristics and environmental effects, structural value, construction methods, professionally accepted economic and production systems.
The general principles of cicil engineering are the abilities to work in practical construction projects, handle new information, solve problems, and manage prblems in dificult situations. The student is encouraged to participate continuous education and development
The programme emphasizes communication, group work, leadership and the ability to handle people. The requirements of environmental protection, ecological values, esthetics and quality are emphasized. The programme is multidisciplinary, where the study principles reflect the knowhow requirements of the industry, with whom there is continuous contact.
The programme consists of basic studies, profefssional studies, optional studies, controlled field work and a final study. The capital city area has an emphasis on renovation and international projects. Students have the international study or training possibility offered to them.
Laboratories
Some studies take place in the laboratories, wshere some project based education methods are used.
Concrete laboratory
All students will become familiar with the characteristics of concrete. The teaching is done in groups, where the principles of wet and dry concrete are studied, as well frameworks and reinforcement mehtods. Some final works are commissioned from industry to be carried in the laboratories.
The structures laboratory
The structures laboratory main directions are to study laboratory testing for renovation, and structural technology questions.
Some service commissions to industry are possible, if resources allow it. The commissions may be measurements, or full research projects for materials and methods.
The computer laboratory
The computers laboratory includes three computer classrooms, and one classroom devoted to individual studies and project works. The programmes used are connected both to the local server and the internet. Word processing, excel, database, programming and language programmes are in full use.
The surveying laboratory
The surveying laboratory allows the student to work with soil and rock samples and their characteristics. In the field, boring test are made, and recored on electronically controlled measuring equipment connectded directly to the PC.
