Objective

The student will learn how to work in a laboratory in a safe and appropriate manner, how to use and maintain basic laboratory equipment and how to dispose of laboratory waste. The student is able to report the results in a proper manner.

Content

1. Safe and appropriate handling of laboratory equipment and chemicals. Group work.
2. Controlling of basic methods, tools and materials.
3. Reporting and evaluation of the results.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Evaluation criterias for content 1
The student is expected to demonstrate the proper procedure of laboratory safety when working in the laboratory. The student has read the instructions in advance. He or she cleans up after suggestion. The student is able to act as a member in a team.

Evaluation criterias for content 2
The student is expected to choose the right tools according to the situation. The student is able to work in a laboratory but needs some guidance.

Evaluation criterias for content 3
The student is able to report the results but he or she needs some guidance. The report is made according to a model report and includes all claimed parts. There are no factual errors in the report. Results have been reported with the right precision including the right units.

Evaluation criterias for content 1
In addition: The student can take into account his/her own and other people’s safety in the laboratory. Cleans up after himself or herself without suggestion. The student works carefully and in a target-oriented manner.

Evaluation criterias for content 2
In addition: The student masters maintenance of basic laboratory equipment. The student manages to work in the laboratory based on the work instructions.

Evaluation criteria for content 3
In addition: The student can evaluate the validity and sources of errors of the results.

Evaluation criterias for content 1
In addition: The student pays independently attention to environmental aspects in his or her laboratory working process. The student is able to act as a member of a team respecting other team members and their ideas.

Evaluation criterias for content 2
In addition: The student is able to work independently in the laboratory. The student masters maintenance of basic laboratory equipment and instruments without any request. The student has planned the discharging and the scheduling of the work in advance.

Evaluation criterias for content 3
In addition: The student can make conclusions based on the results. The sources of information used in the report are reliable and the linguistic form is good.
