Physical ChemistryLaajuus (6 ECTS)
Course unit code: TX00AD08
General information
- Credits
- 6 ECTS
Objective
After completion of this course the student understands the concepts of physical chemistry included in the course and is able to to solve relevant problems in his/her own field, to apply this understanding as a necessary basis in later studies and to utilize it in future professional tasks.
Content
1. The release and absorption of heat in chemical reactions and phase transitions; the concept of enthalpy.
2. Assessing the spontaneity of chemical reactions and phase transitions.
3. Application of the concept of equilibrium: chemical reactions, phase equilibria, in addition e.g. ion exchange, extraction.
4. The factors affecting the rate of chemical reactions; quantitative assessment of reaction rates.
5. The following topics with different emphasis in different degree programmes:
- basics of surface chemistry: dispersion, colloids, surface-active agents
- radiochemistry and isotope techniques
- basics of electrochemistry
