Basics of physiotherapy professionLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Objective

Students are familiar with the interactional elements required to build up and maintain a therapeutic relationship. Students know that physiotherapists’ basic task is to support people’s wellbeing and
health by promoting their functional ability and mobility in various environments. They are capable of acting in accordance with the principles of national and international professional ethics. Students
are able to explain how the central concepts and models of physiotherapy help to analyse physiotherapeutic activities, their documentation and professional dialogue.
The students acquire the written and oral language skills in the second domestic language that are necessary in their professional field, as required by national legislation (352/2003 8§).
The students are able to communicate in Swedish in professional contexts both in Finland and in the other Nordic countries, taking into account the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the communication partners.
The students acquire oral and written language and communication skills that are at least at the B1 level as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
During their studies, the students form a positive and realistic view of their language and communicative competence as well as skills and motivation to develop it further.

Content

The history, present state and future of the physiotherapy profession, education and
physiotherapeutic methods Physiotherapy in diverse operational environments Professionalism,
professional ethics and legislation Documentation in physiotherapy as part of the national
documentation standards Physiotherapy process, therapeutic relationship, interaction and dialogue
Central concepts and explanatory theories
Swedish language skills are integarted into this course and contain the following themes:
- self-assessing one’s language and communication skills and developing learning strategies
- education and career planning
- organisations, working environments, tasks, processes and tools
- field-related texts; increasing and activating the knowledge of technical terminology
- key interactive communication situations: individual and group communication.

Qualifications

The acquisition of professional language and communication competence in the second domestic language (Swedish) requires the starting level B1.1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students use the appropriate core concepts as well as make choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They recognise the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.
Students’ actions follow the rules and instructions given, and they use working methods appropriately and safely.
Students work according to the professional ethics of their own field, and they act responsibly as group members.

Further information

If a student's language of school education is Swedish, he/she attends Finnish as Second Language - course instead of a Swedish course.

A student attending the Finnish course is to have the minimum language proficiency level B2.1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
