Osaamistavoitteet

Care of the critically ill patient course is aimed at all the second and third year students who are interested in adult critical care/acute care nursing. Student will gain basic knowledge about assessment and management of adult patients who are acutely or critically ill. The course focuses on nursing role and skills on recognizing signs of clinical deterioration. The course aims to provide support for students planning to complete their final clinical practice placement in acute care areas (e.g. ICU, HDU, Recovery & Anaesthetics, Surgical wards, Acute medical wards)

Sisältö

Theory:
- Introduction to nursing in acute care areas/critical care
- Assessment of the critically ill patient (ABCDE approach)
- Resuscitation, emergency guidelines & professional communication (ISBAR)
- Shock –causes and treatment
- Principles of fluid resuscitation
- Drugs used in acute care/critical care areas
- Principles of acid-base balance and interpretation of blood gas analysis
- Oxygen administration in acute care nursing
- Principles of care of ventilated patient (principles of ventilation modes) and non-invasive ventilation (CPAP)
- Principles of care of a patient with tracheostomy
Clinical laboratory practice:
- Arterial cannulation (arterial blood sampling) and care of the central line catheter
- Airway management work shops (basics of intubation, LMA & i-gel insertion)
Group work: presentations
- Topics: heart failure, respiratory failure, kidney failure, burns patient, neurological patient
