The aim of degree programme in dental technology is to educate oral health care professionals those who are able to meet the challenges of present day and near future in operational field of dental technologist. Besides theoretical education there is a special emphasis on guided working life practicing. Studies are accomplished as well in Helsinki Polytechnic as in real working life. The student will learn to perform demanding dental tasks that require great manual precision, extensive theoretical knowledge and multiprofessional co-operation. The student will be able to combine the technology and the application and usage of materials with the handiwork so that the technical, physiological, aesthetic, biological and ecological requirements are taken into consideration. The student will participate in multiprofessional and international research and development programmes. Objective is that the student understands essential knowledge base of dental technology. He/she is able to follow the development of his/her own profession and is able to develop new working techniques and methods. The student develops as a human being as well as a professional in dental technology. He/she is able to accommodate his/her expert knowledge according to changes in society, in health care field and in dental technology field.
Dental technicians implement and develop the technical aspects of prosthetics in the head area according to the needs of the population. The main areas of responsibility for dental technicians are the design and manufacture of dental prostheses, and the technical implementation of appliances used in orthodontics and functional disorders of the masticatory system. Part of the technical work in maxillofacial prosthetics and hearing care is included in the dental technician's job description.
In future dental technology, the focus will be on material technology and the aesthetics and individual requirements. Dental technicians must be able to analyse the specific aspects of their work in direct interaction with the customer. In order to act as a dental technology specialist and to ensure a high quality of dental prosthesis work, the dental technician must acquire a more complete knowledge of narrower areas of speciality. The need for specialisation is heightened by international competition and the high rate at which more and more information is obtained from various fields of dental technology. In the future, the profession will require not only handicraft and theoretical knowledge but also entrepreneurship, independent professional development and ability to operate internationally.
In the beginning of one's studies the student will devise a personal study plan which makes individual needs and hopes possible to attain.
75 credits of the studies are carried out during practical training in order to promote the students´ professional skills. Practical training is integrated to the different study units. The training focuses on creative application of the central professional theories in patient work. During the practical training the student familiarises himself/herself with authentic working environments and develops his/her manual skills. The practical training may take place under the guidance of a registered dental technician in privately owned or municipal dental laboratories, as well as university dental laboratories or in the dental laboratory attached to the polytechnic.
