Cell MorphologyLaajuus (6 ECTS)
Course unit code: SB00AA22
General information
- Credits
- 6 ECTS
Objective
Students explain the formation, mobility, functions and tests of blood cells and their manifestations in different bodily fluids. They describe sampling of aspirates and preparation of bone marrow smears. Students use microscopes and recognise and sort blood, urine and aspirate cells and particles to a high quality standard using different methods and describe related anomalous findings.
Content
Formation, tasks, mobility and functions of blood cells in circulation and other bodily fluids. Factors relating to aspirate sampling and preparation of bone marrow smears. Preparation and staining of blood, urine and aspirate samples for microscopic examination. Recognition and sorting of cells using microscopes and cell counters (staining and cytometry in a chamber and using automated equipment).
Qualifications
Prerequisites: Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology; Cell Biology and Genetics; Pre-analytics and Customer Service; Laboratory Techniques, Supplies and Working Methods

Assessment criteria, good (3)
Students explain the formation, mobility, functions and roles of blood cells and their manifestations in different bodily fluids to a good standard.
They describe sampling of aspirates and preparation of bone marrow smears in considerable detail.
Students use microscopes to a good standard and recognise and sort blood, urine and aspirate cells and particles to a high quality standard, using different methods, and describe related anomalous findings.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Students explain the formation, mobility, functions and roles of blood cells and their manifestations in different bodily fluids to an excellent standard.
They describe sampling of aspirates and preparation of bone marrow smears comprehensively.
Students use microscopes to a high quality standard and recognise and sort blood, urine and aspirate cells and particles to an excellent standard, using different methods, and describe related anomalous findings extensively.
