Course unit code: SB00AA14

General information

Credits
2 ECTS

Objective

Students describe the systematics, structures and significance of organic compounds. Students use the concepts and knowledge of chemistry in biomedical laboratory work.

Content

Hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives and their structural formulae, chemical reactions of functional groups, isomers and the significance of isomerism

Qualifications

Prerequisites: General and Inorganic Chemistry

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students describe the systematics, structures and significance of organic compounds. Students use the concepts and knowledge of chemistry in biomedical laboratory work.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students describe the structures of simple hydrocarbons, explain the principles of naming them, recognise functional groups, describe and explain formation of hydrocarbon derivatives, list the effects of polarity, identify the key types of reactions relevant to biochemistry, recognise the types of isomerism and describe and explain the significance of isomerism.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students explain the structures of hydrocarbons and formation of hydrocarbon derivatives, identify organic compounds, present functional groups, explain the effects of polarity, explain the key types of reactions relevant to biochemistry, compare the types of isomerism and explain the significance of isomerism in biosciences.
