Rationale of the Degree Programme
Rationale of the Degree Programme in Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is based on collaboration between the client and the Occupational Therapist as well as on the therapeutic use of occupations. The purpose of occupational therapy is to promote and improve individual clients' occupational performance and their participation as equal members of society. Occupational therapy enables clients to perform meaningful and significant activities of daily living within the limits of their functional abilities. Client-centred practice, the therapeutic relationship and meaningful occupations play a key role in occupational therapy as a profession.
Occupational Therapists are willing and able to participate in multidisciplinary co-operation. They are keen to develop themselves and their profession. Occupational Therapists have the capacity to operate both locally and internationally by influencing policy-making and people's health.
The curriculum for the Degree Programme in Occupational Therapy is based on the following main themes (modules): Client-Centred Practice, Occupation, Environment, Conscious Use of Self, Occupational Therapy Process, Professional Know-How and Lifelong Development of Occupational Therapy.
The curriculum is structured through dialogue between theory and practice. Work placements can be implemented as part of very different courses in a wide variety of working environments.
The curriculum complies with the international Minimum Standards for the Education of Occupational Therapists drawn up by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists in 2002, the standards of the European Network of Occupational Therapy in Higher Education 2004 and national standards for Education in the Healthcare Profession as Occupational Therapists by the Finnish Ministry of Education in 2005.
