Objective

After completing the study unit, students integrate the premises and methods of health promotion with the childbearing cycle as well as with the antenatal and postnatal work supporting the wellbeing of the child and the family. They embrace family and empowering approaches to their support of motherhood, fatherhood and parenthood. Students are able to conduct an interview supporting early interaction with an expecting mother/family or a mother who has given birth and apply the central features of family coaching to their work. Students assess interaction between parents and their babies/children and identify situations and families in which the healthy psychosocial development of a child could be at risk. Students demonstrate competence to apply different work methods promoting families’ health in a flexible way. They are familiar with normal pregnancy, progression of the development of a healthy child as well as know how to explain the individual differences in it. Students are capable of implementing antenatal follow-up and assessment as well as identifying irregularities during pregnancy. Similarly, they are able to implement public health nursing during the postpartum period and provide breastfeeding counselling. Students implement the follow-up and assessment of the growth and development of a healthy child as well as vaccinate children and apply the knowledge base of vaccinations to their work. They implement guidance promoting sexual health. Students find justified solutions in decision-making and are able to consult experts if necessary. They are also able to refer clients of antenatal and postnatal clinics to further treatment in unusual situations. Students are proficient in working as members of network and multiprofessional work groups.
