Objective

The studies lead to familiarity with the theoretical foundation of surgical patient care and with the hands-on skills required in surgical and perioperative nursing settings. Emphasis is placed on supporting coping of patients and significant others as well as on patient safety.

Characteristics of surgical and perioperative nursing
Principles of asepsis and infection control
Admission and preoperative nursing assessment of the patient admitted for a surgical procedure
Pre-, intra- and postoperative observation and monitoring of the patient
Special features of medication- and fluid therapy
Essential intraoperative nursing interventions
Documentation and discharge planning.
Safe use of medical equipment.
