Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

Can design the heating and ventilation system of a residential building.

Content

1. CAD design of heating and ventilation systems.
2. Calculation of the heating demand of a building.
3. Heat production in buildings. Boilers for fossile fuels. District heating. Electric heating systems.
4. Dimensioning of water based heat distribution systems. Pressure loss calculations and balancing.
5. Dimensioning of ventilation air flows. Principles of ventilation systems. Lay-out of ductwork.
6. Dimensioning of ventilation ducts. Pressure loss calculations and balancing.
7. Selection of ventilation system components.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Can explain the basic requirements and operation principles of heating and ventilation systems. Can, when assisted, design heating and ventilation systems for a simple residential building. Can select correct pipe and duct sizes and calculate their pressure losses. Can estimate the heating demand of a simple building. Can draw plans of heating and ventilation systems using CAD.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Can explain the basic requirements and operation principles of heating and ventilation systems. Can individually design heating and ventilation systems for a typical residential building using CAD. Can calculate the heating demand of a residential building. Can compare different options for heat production.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to (3), can find energy efficient heating and ventilation solutions also for residential buildings. Can compare the energy performance of different heating and ventilation systems.
