Objective

The student will know the basic concepts of probability and basics of statistical analysis and is able to apply them to different engineering applications.

Content

Probability basics. Random variable, distribution, expected value and variance. Common probability distributions with applications (using Excel). Reliability analysis. Basics of statistical analysis: sampling, estimation, correlation, linear regression.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student understands the concept of probability, the classical and statistical approaches to probability and basic concepts relating to probability distributions. The student is able to use basic rules of probability, knows the most common probability distributions and is able use software (Excel) to calculate probabilities relating to them. The student knows the concepts of sample and population and basic ideas of statistical analysis.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the requirements above, the student is able to solve simple problems relating to the most common probability distributions also without a computer. The student knows the basic concepts of reliability analysis, the concept of confidence interval and the basic principles of statistical testing, and is able to solve simple practical problems relating to them.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the requirements above, the student has a deep understanding about the topics covered in the course and is able to apply them creatively and sensibly in different applications.
