Objective
After completion of this course the student will understand the structures and operating principles the power electronics components. He/she will be able to evaluate the properties of different components. The student will be able to assess where and how the semiconductors can be used. The student will be able to select the appropriate component for a particular application, and he/she is able to choose the component with the required heat sink and protective components/circuits.
The contents and the assessment criteria of the course may be different depending on the teacher of the course.
Content
1. Structures of power electronic semiconductors
2. Operating principles of power electronic semiconductors
3. Properties of power electronic semiconductors
4. Heating of power electronic semiconductors
5. Protection of power electronic semiconductors
6. Use of power electronic semiconductors in power electronic circuits
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1. The student recognizes the structures of the power electronic semiconductors
2. The student understands the operating principles of the power electronic semiconductors
3. The student understands the properties of the power electronic semiconductors
4. The student knows how to select cooling elements for power electronic semiconductor components
5. The student knows how the power electronic semiconductors are protected
6. The student knows how power electronic semiconductors are used in power electronics circuits
Assessment criteria, good (3)

4. The student is able to calculate the required heat sink to a particular power electronic semiconductor in a particular application
5. The student is able to determine which components/ circuits can be used for protection of power electronic semiconductor components
6. The student is able to choose the right power electronic semiconductor component for a specific application
