Objective
Final Thesis is part of practical research and development work carried out at Metropolia University of applied sciences . Increasingly, it will be concluded as part of large, multidisciplinary projects initiated together with the university or work community. The Final Thesis at Metropolia consists of 15 credits.
The objective of the final thesis process is to develop students’ creativity and problem solving abilities as well as their independent working methods. The thesis may be a form of a research development task, of an operational quality or an artistic development task. The thesis always includes a written part. The work may be for example a design task, a product development project, a survey project, an evaluation task or an operational or artistic work. The students apply functioning work and research methods to the project and utilise available research information.
The thesis is connected with the professional studies and will be submitted individually or as a group task. The work carried out will be supervised by a teacher assigned by the study programme, other experts and increasingly, the mentor from the work community. The aim of the thesis is to develop student’s professional expertise and enhance his/her abilities to work within expert assignments.
Thesis work progresses in stages, which include: choosing and defining the topic, planning the thesis work, acquiring information, collecting data, analysis, ideation work, implementation, evaluation and writing the report. Although all Final theses share these features, the final thesis work is always carried out individually, depending on the field, topic, and author. The final stage is the “Maturity Exam”, which is the test of ability in the student’s field of study and in the Finnish language (Act on Polytechnic Studies 352/2003).
